Recreation, creative art, and music can rejuvenate a child while they learn a new skill. All the activities involving art, music and sports not only boost mental and emotional health, but also have educational benefits. Music stimulates different areas of the brain, singing, playing an instrument mostly involves using both hands and fingers which is known to stimulate various areas of the brain in both right and left cerebral hemispheres. It is activating areas of brain involved with reading and mathematical calculations. It improves mood and helps in better emotional development. Music can improve memory, it helps children to learn words, sounds faster. Music can be a way of expression for the child and good way to vent out emotions and improve resilience in children. Instead of viewing it as an extracurricular activity, it can be included as an overall part of the education.

Art is another neglected area of education, but science had proved immense benefits of art in increasing academic achievements, it can become a means of communication and expression for a child. Art can help a child excel in and out of the classroom. It not only stimulates imagination but also improves a child’s creative thinking and out of box approach. This enhanced creativity can extend to various aspects of life as they grow. Creative ability and innovative approach open doors for employment as it is one of the most demanded qualities by an employer.

Music art and sports open opportunities for making friends and help build team spirit and develop leadership qualities, disciple and help children to relate with others. Art can create opportunities for toddlers to learn new vocabulary, language, and communication. Art stimulates a child’s visual-spatial abilities while drawing, sculpturing, and painting. Music on the other hand stimulates the temporal area of the brain improving the spatial-temporal reasoning abilities there helping children learn better logical, abstract thinking and problem-solving abilities. Of all art, music and sports build confidence and self-respect.

In the past two years, the impact of covid has led to reduced physical sports and outdoor activities for children, exposing them to increased screen time causing a detrimental effect on only on their physical health but also on their emotional and mental health. Sports helps the child to channelise their negative or hyper activeness into a more meaningful task. Sports improves a child’s body awareness, orientation, and agility. It builds patience, self-control, discipline, and confidence. Sports help children to socialise, make friends and improve team spirit and harness leadership qualities. Sports can no longer take a back seat in a child’s curriculum, and it must be an integral part of their education and growing up.

Education and learning are not only about academics, but they must focus on a child’s overall development. Incorporating music, art and sports into a child’s curriculum can harness various skills and shall lead to the holistic development of a child in various developmental domains. Let us allow our children to enjoy the world of canvases, rhythms, and playgrounds to help them grow up into resilient adults.
