NEW DELHI: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Friday announced the appointment of Dr Ashok Rajgopal, Group Chairman Orthopedics at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, as the sports injury consultant to treat the country’s sportspersons preparing for international and multi-sport events.
IOA secretary general, Rajeev Mehta, informed about Dr Rajgopal coming on board as a consultant for which he has offered his free services to all sportspersons including the past and present executive members of the Olympic body. Dr Rajgopal has been the recipient of Padam Shri, the country’s fourth highest civilian honour in 2014.
“He has offered his services to all the aspirant sportspersons for various international events and Olympics,” Mehta stated.
Dr Rajgopal has treated many top sportspersons in the past including Pullela Gopichand, Karnam Malleshwari, Bhaichung Bhutia, Kunjurani Devi and Madhumita Bist, among others.
The eminent doctor had been the honorary orthopedic surgeon to former President of India, K R Narayanan, and was among the panel of doctors who had successfully performed knee surgery on former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
