Frances Haugen giving testimony at the Draft Online Safety Bill (Joint Committee) told British lawmakers that Facebook stokes online hate and extremism and lacks any incentive to fix the problems. It prioritises engagement-based ranking and pushes people to the extremes. The engagement-based ranking does two things: one, it prioritises and amplifies divisive and polarising extreme content and two it concentrates it. The former Facebook data scientist said regulation is required for tech companies. “Unquestionably, it’s making hate worse,” she said.
