New Jersey voters on Tuesday approved a constitutional amendment allowing more nonprofits to host bingo and other games of chance, but a ballot question to allow betting on college sports was going down to defeat Wednesday.

The Associated Press called the bingo referendum but had not called the sports betting question as of early afternoon. The sports betting question, however, was losing big: 57% to 43%, with 98% of the voting precincts reporting.

New Jersey legalized sports betting in 2018 following a victory at the U.S. Supreme Court. The state since has surpassed Nevada in sports wagering and in September became the first state to take in more than $1 billion in sports bets in a single month.

That’s without allowing bets on local colleges such as Rutgers University or on collegiate sporting events taking place in the Garden State. New Jersey had been the only state with legal sports wagering that didn’t allow bets on in-state college sports. The amendment asked voters if they would allow this.

With 98% of the vote counted, the nonprofit bingo amendment was approved, 64% to 36%.

The amendment paves the way for all nonprofit organizations, rather than only certain groups such as military veterans and senior citizens, to raise money to fund their operations from games of chance such as bingo and raffles.
