WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Kyle Connor and Nikolaj Ehlers each had a goal and had an assist, and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1. Paul Stastny, Neal Pionk and Dominic Toninato also scored in Winnipeg’s fourth straight home win. Andrew Copp assisted on three goals for the Jets, who have posted their best start to a regular season (6-2-2) in the team’s modern era. Eric Comrie stopped 16 shots. MacKenzie Entwistle scored short-handed in the third period for Chicago, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves. The Blackhawks have lost 11 of their first 12 games (1-9-2).

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have added a veteran to their starting rotation, claiming left-hander Wade Miley off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. The 35-year-old Miley went 12-7 with a 3.37 ERA in 28 starts for Cincinnati this season. He threw his first career no-hitter in a 3-0 win at Cleveland on May 7. Miley has a $10 million club option with a $1 million buyout. The team likely will pick up the option after making the waiver claim. The Cubs are looking for pitching help after going 71-91 this year, their first losing record since 2014. They finished with a 4.87 ERA, ranking 27th in the majors.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers have won three straight heading into a visit from the Chicago Bears. Pittsburgh’s recent surge has coincided with improved play from an offensive line featuring two rookies in left tackle Dan Moore Jr. and center Kendrick Green. The Steelers have gone over 100 yards rushing during their winning streak after topping that number just once in their previous 16 games. The Bears have dropped three in a row. Rookie quarterback Justin Fields played well in a loss to San Francisco, but will face a stiff test from a Steelers pass rush featuring star outside linebacker T.J. Watt.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa was rolling along, unbeaten at No. 2 in the AP poll and with its sights set on a spot in the College Football Playoffs just a few weeks ago. The 19th-ranked Hawkeyes will try to steady themselves after back-to-back losses when they visit Northwestern on Saturday. Iowa has been outscored by a combined 51-14 against Purdue and Wisconsin since knocking off then-No. 4 Penn State to improve to 6-0.  Northwestern is coming off back-to-back blowout losses to Michigan and Minnesota.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota linebacker Jack Gibbens always wanted to play Big Ten football. He grew up more than a thousand miles away in south Texas. Gibbens is a graduate transfer from Abilene Christian. He’s getting his chance this year to relish trying to defend against powerful running teams in the conference. The Gophers are more than holding their own. They rank second in the Big Ten in fewest rushing yards allowed. Minnesota hosts Illinois on Saturday. Stopping Chase Brown is the top priority. Brown is the third-leading rusher in the Big Ten.

UNDATED (AP) — The National Women’s Soccer League opens its postseason this weekend while still reeling following allegations of sexual harassment and coercion against one of its most successful coaches. North Carolina coach Paul Riley was fired in late September after two former players came forward with their stories. The Courage players persevered, and the team opens its playoff run Sunday. The Courage play the Washington Spirit, which has also faced adversity. Gotham FC and the Chicago Red Stars play in the other quarterfinal match on Sunday.
