A record single-day jump of 49,310 new coronavirus patients registered in the last 24 hours has taken India’s COVID-19 tally to 12.87 lakh cases, the Union Health Ministry said this morning. More than 30,000 deaths linked to one of the most infectious illnesses known to the world in the recent decades have been reported in India. In the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry recorded 740 coronavirus-linked deaths. This is the second consecutive day that the country reported a record surge in the number of patients. Yesterday morning, the government said that 45,720 fresh infections and 1,129 deaths were registered in the previous 24 hours.

The number of coronavirus cases in India have doubled in nearly three weeks since July 2 when the country crossed the six lakh-mark. The country’s Covid tally touched the 10 lakh-mark last Friday. Since then, around three lakh new infections have been reported.

In the last 24 hours, the highest number of fresh infections were reported from these five states – Maharashtra (9,895), Andhra Pradesh (7,998), Tamil Nadu (6,472), Karnataka (5,030) and Uttar Pradesh (2,516).

The highest number of COVID-19-linked deaths were reported from these five deaths in the last 24 hours: Maharashtra (298), Karnataka (97), Tamil Nadu (88), Andhra Pradesh (61) and West Bengal (34).

Around 8.17 lakh patients have recovered so far; the recovery rate stood at 63.45 per cent this morning. The positivity rate – percentage of patients who have tested positive for coronavirus – is 13.97 per cent. Earlier this week, the government had said that it aims to bring down the positivity rate to 5 per cent.

Around 1.54 crore samples have been tested so far, the government data shows. The highest number of samples – 3,52,801 were tested yesterday as the states across the country try to ramp up testing efforts. India has an estimated population of about 130 crores.

While Delhi has logged the third highest number of cases so far with over 1.27 lakh patients, over 1.09 lakh patients have recovered in the city, according to the official figures, indicating an improvement in Covid situation.

In Telangana, a top health official has hinted at community transmission. “The next four to five weeks are going to be very crucial and people must exercise utmost care and not neglect symptoms,” Dr G Srinivasa Rao, Telangana’s Director of Public Health, said. Telangana Health Minister Etala Rajender, however, has denied it.

Worldwide, over 1.54 crore people have been affected by coronavirus so far; 6.32 lakh have died.

The United States – epicentre of the pandemic – has logged over 40 lakh cases so far. Of these, 26.56 lakh are active cases. 1.44 lakh people have died.

India is at the third spot in the list of most affected countries after the Unites States and Brazil.
