New York surprised and swamped by record-breaking rainfall as extra downpours are anticipated

One of New York’s wettest days in a long time left the metropolitan space surprised and swamped Friday after heavy rainfall knocked out a number of subway and commuter rail traces, stranded drivers on highways, flooded basements and shuttered a terminal at LaGuardia Airport for hours.

Some 8.65 inches (21.97 centimeters) of rain had fallen at John F. Kennedy Airport by dusk Friday, surpassing the report for any September day set throughout Hurricane Donna in 1960, the National Weather Service mentioned.

Parts of Brooklyn noticed greater than 7.25 inches (18.41 centimeters), with a minimum of one spot recording 2.5 inches (6 centimeters) in a single hour, in accordance with climate and metropolis officers.

More downpours had been anticipated Saturday.
