At least 40 individuals have been killed in flooding within the Indian Himalayan area, officers have mentioned.

The flood started on Wednesday when the waters of the glacial South Lhonak lake breached a hydroelectric dam, triggering flash flooding within the mountainous Sikkim area of northeastern India.

The flooding, which occurred alongside the Teesta River within the Lachen Valley, impacted the lives of at the least 22,000 individuals.

The dying toll was put at 18 by officers in Sikkim on Thursday.

In the neighbouring downstream state of West Bengal, officers informed journalists that emergency groups had recovered one other 22 our bodies that had been washed away.
