INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday afternoon to postpone regular season competition and GLVC Championships for the 2020 fall semester. Football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball competition is now scheduled for the Spring, while cross country, golf, tennis, swimming & diving and track & field will be permitted this fall at the discretion of each institution.
All contests for the non-championship portion for sports such as baseball, softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse are canceled for the fall semester and those teams will resume their normal championship-competition schedule in the Spring. A decision for the start of basketball and wrestling competition will be made by Oct. 1.
The GLVC becomes the 11th of the 23 NCAA Division II conferences to postpone fall competition. The NCAA has yet to determine the final status of its fall national championships.
“While today’s decision is not the scenario we were hoping for in regards to the upcoming athletic seasons, it does provide us the best opportunity to maintain the health and safety of our athletic departments and entire campuses,” said UIndy Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Young. “Along with the health and safety of our student-athletes, we will continue to provide opportunities to win in the classroom, as people, and as athletes.”
The GLVC considered the NCAA “high contact risk” classification, deeming the sports of football, soccer and volleyball as such. The aforementioned sports allowed to continue are deemed “low or medium contact risk” by the NCAA and are able to remain on schedule.
Online schedules for each sport will be updated as soon as made available.
