It appears Colorado will at least have some semblance of a fall sports season despite the ongoing concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

The Colorado High School Activities Association greenlit the boys golf season over the weekend, the first high school sport in the state to be cleared for the 2020-21 school year.

Meaning, for now, boys golfers can practice with their school team — under health guidelines and proper social distancing — starting next Monday.

Competition can start as soon as August 6.

“I’m just glad that golf got the green light and I’m hoping the rest of the sports will follow here soon,” Frederick golf coach Chris DeSantis said. “It’s all about the kids. And when the kids can play their sports and do their extra-curricular activities, it definitely helps everyone out.”

It’s certainly a positive sign for parents, coaches and athletes in Colorado who have been holding out hope for a return to high school sports in 2020.

A decision regarding the full athletic calendar will be revealed soon, CHSAA said, once OK’d by state officials.

“Boys golf was not included in plans submitted to the state officials for approval because the sport is able to play under the current guidelines,” the association stated in Saturday’s release.

As with the reappearance of other sports around the country, though, boys golf will have to adapt to the new rules and regulations in pandemic times.

Under the sport’s bulletin on CHSAANow, rules adhering to CHSAA’s COVID-19 guidelines are laid out as is a letter from CHSAA associate commissioner Tom Robinson to boys golf coaches.

“During the season, team practices and competitions will require careful planning on your part to comply with state, county, or city health department guidelines,” Robinson said in the letter. “You will need to communicate early and often these guidelines to your players, parents, assistant coaches, and others involved with your team.”

Among issues of importance touched on are sanitation, daily screenings, social distancing, and the use of masks.

Shifting strictly to digital scorecards will also be implemented.

Scattered tee times and varied practice times also could be possible, especially with questions regarding the availability of golf courses.

“Golf courses are busier than heck right now with golf being one of the activities that’s available right now,” Fairview coach John Zerwin said. “They’re sold out all day long with the full-paying public. So, there’s not as much free time on golf courses right now. It’s quite possible we’ll have to reduce the number of practices that we have, reduce the time that we’re practicing. All of that could be possible.”
