NEW DELHI: In a booster dose for the fight capabilities of the armed forces earlier than the fiscal ends, the defence ministry on Friday inked 5 main capital acquisition contracts for missiles, air defence weapons, aero-engines and radars value Rs 39,125 crore.

The greatest contract was for the Rs 19,519 crore procurement of over 220 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, with an extended-range of 450-km for frontline warships, inked with Indo-Russian three way partnership BrahMos Aerospace. Another Rs 988 crore contract was for the related shipborne BrahMos vertical launch programs, an official stated.

Two IAF contracts have been inked with personal sector big L&T. The first was the Rs 7,669 crore deal for 61 “flights” of close-in weapon programs, derivatives of the L-70 air defence weapons, for terminal air defence of choose places within the nation.

The second Rs 5,700 crore deal was for 12 high-power radars (HPRs) to switch and increase the prevailing long-range IAF radars alongside the borders with China and Pakistan. “The new modern active aperture phased array-based HPRs, with advanced surveillance features, will significantly enhance the terrestrial air defence capabilities,” an official stated.

The fifth contract was for RD-33 aero-engines for MiG-29 fighters, which shall be produced by Hindustan Aeronautics at Koraput with Russian collaboration for Rs 5,250 crore. The 80 new engines will assist maintain the operational functionality of the round 60 twin-engine MiG-29s in IAF fleet.
