Area residents can enjoy a day of fun in Nautical Mile Park during the Marine City Area Chamber of Commerce’s Take Me to the River event on Aug. 29.
The event will feature a magician sponsored by the Marine City Rotary Club at 1 p.m., a fashion show with models of all ages from the community at 3 p.m. and live music from The Gobies at 6 p.m. There will also be one-day deals and discounts from the local shops, specials at restaurants and raffles and giveaways donated by local businesses throughout the day.
“We are excited to finally have events back as an option,” Marine City Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kyla Hatcher said. “We are a nonprofit, so event fundraisers are the main way we keep going. So it was hard to adjust to that.”
“We also want our businesses to be successful and know they are trying to get back on their feet, so it’s a bit more difficult getting donations,” she added. “So we were thrilled when we received the grant to cover costs.”
The chamber received a grant from the DTE Energy and AT&T foundations in order to put on the event. The chamber submitted the idea last month and was approved for the grant a few weeks ago.
“So we have been quick moving since then,” Hatcher said.
For the fashion show, the opportunity to model is open to both men and women of all ages. Hatcher said there are typically a lot of high school students that participate.
The chamber opened up the opportunity to donate the fashions for the fashion show to all shops that sell clothing, jewelry or other accessories.
“We have even looked into ways to involve other businesses like salons to help promote,” Hatcher said.
She said the chamber is still working on gathering raffle prizes and more details will be provided in the future.
During the event, there will be signage up in Nautical Mile Park in order to make sure people are social distancing.
“We are hoping that by having it outdoors, people will have room to safely distance themselves to where they are comfortable,” Hatcher said.
She noted that people should have a mask to enter all businesses and bring chairs and blankets for seating.
“We are hoping to have different guests and crowds throughout the day, just depending on which ‘performance’ they would enjoy most,” Hatcher said. “We just want people to come downtown, enjoy deals and discounts at some of the shops and restaurants, and have entertainment while they do it.”
