Grits can be described as a wet meal made out of boiled cornmeal and is generally served with plentiful amounts of butter. The word ‘grits’ comes from the Old English word ‘grytt’ meaning “coarse meal”. They are made from dried, ground corn (Maize) cooked in various liquids like water, milk, or broth, until the mix reaches a thick, creamy, porridge-like consistency. Grits originated in the Southern United States and are now popular nationwide. They are often paired with flavorful ingredients, such as butter, sugar, syrups, cheeses, and meats like bacon, shrimp, and catfish. Grits can be both sweet and savory, the latter one being more common. They are similar to other thick maize based porridges from around the world. However, Grits should not be confused with boiled ground corn, mush, or polenta as they have different ingredients and preparation. There are many varieties if grits available including Stone-Ground, Hominy, Quick and Regular, and Instant. Here is a look at some health benefits of Grits.
