The Metro Public Health Department has weighed in on Nashville interscholastic sports for the fall.

The health department recommended on Tuesday that no school sports events take place until both participating schools determine that students can safely attend classes in person.

Director of Schools Adrienne Battle announced Tuesday afternoon that Metro Nashville Public Schools won’t reopen classrooms until October, according to multiple people familiar with her plan.

The majority of the district’s 86,000 students will continue learning virtually until the district’s fall break begins on Oct. 5, Battle told school leaders and teachers during afternoon conference calls Tuesday.

Even then, most students aren’t likely to return to return to the classroom right away. Instead they will be phased in starting with the youngest learners in grades K-2.

If sports can be held at the school or youth league level in Davidson County after Labor Day, sporting events will be limited to two spectators per athlete and coach. No general student body attendance will be allowed and no marching bands are to be present.

Masks must be worn and social distancing maintained. There must be hand sanitation stations provided at all entrances and exits. And concession stands are to remain closed.

There must be a plan in place to address “choke points/clustering” such as entry and exit spaces and restrooms.
