Syracuse, N.Y. — Nassau County became the first of New York’s 11 sections to postpone fall sports after an emergency meeting Wednesday morning.

According to Newsday, Nassau superintendents and Section XIII officials voted to delay fall sports until 2021 and now hope to play all three sports seasons between January and June. That option is one the New York State Public High School Athletic Association has made available to all sections to consider if they don’t feel its feasible to compete in the fall.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo provided guidance for practices on Monday, but Jericho School District superintendent Hank Grishman said it still isn’t safe.

“No matter what procedures are put in place it’s just not safe to return to sports –- there’s still too many unknowns with the virus,” Grishman said, according to Newsday. “In my 50-year career in education, nothing holds a candle to this. It’s all a bad dream.”

Newsday also reported that section directors met on Tuesday and Central NY’s Section III was among those also considering delaying fall sports for the January-to-June model. Suffolk County’s Section XI has said it plans to move forward with fall sports starting on Sep. 21.

Gov. Cuomo said Wednesday that sections need to use caution before deciding to move forward with sports, and he wants to see a stretch of low infection rates before approving football games.

“These are all value judgments that we’re making, and the balance is always the same,” Cuomo said Wednesday “New York has achieved that balance extraordinarily well. Not a personal opinion. It’s a numerical, quantifiable fact.”

While New York debates moving forward, 17 states have already opted to cancel football this fall. New York neighbors Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut currently plan to play.
