A school district in Salem County has canceled its remaining summer sports practices after a student-athlete tested positive for the coronavirus following a party with other teenagers at the Jersey Shore.
“One of our student athletes attended the Sea Isle City party on Aug. 13 and (has) tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19),” said Zenaida Cobain, superintendent of the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District.
Cobain was referring to a party attended by a group of students from Gloucester County, who later tested positive for the virus.
In an email to parents Wednesday evening, Cobain wrote that she learned of the student’s positive test on Tuesday and said the teenager is undergoing a mandated 14-day quarantine.
“The athletic practices for the summer have been cancelled and they will resume in September,” Cobain said, adding that families in the district should monitor themselves for symptoms of COVID-19.
In an interview Thursday, Cobain told NJ Advance Media that no other students in the district of 2,300 have tested positive for COVID-19 and said they are working closely with the local health department to conduct contact tracing.
Last week, officials in Gloucester County said a group of students from Kingsway Regional High School in Woolwich tested positive for the coronavirus after attending the Sea Isle party.
In a letter to parents last week, Kingsway Superintendent James J. Lavender said the county health department was “working hard to determine the extent of this exposure.”
The Penns Grove-Carneys Point district plans to reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The district is not included on the list for remote learning.
