AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Fitch quarterback Devin Sherwood is not afraid to spread the ball around.

That worked well for the Falcons as Sherwood threw five touchdowns to five different receivers in a 33-3 victory over rival Boardman Saturday night.

“It was nice to spread the ball out, and I thought Devin did a great job of that,” first-year Fitch coach T.J. Parker said. “Boardman did an excellent job of playing some games inside to stop our run, but overall I’m proud of my guys and I’m proud of my coaches.”

Sherwood threw for 312 yards and the five TDs in the win.

“We have some really, really good weapons on the perimeter, and everyone can really make a play with the ball in their hands,” Sherwood said. “We try to spread the wealth, and it worked out for us.”

The Falcons drove down the field early in the first quarter, and Sherwood hit Jaden Murray on an 8-yard strike to get on the board.

In the second quarter, Boardman quarterback Terence Thomas had a 4-yard touchdown rush that was called back due to a holding penalty. On the ensuing play, the Falcon defense forced a fumble, regained possession and took a firm grasp of the game’s momentum.

On the drive after the turnover, Sherwood hit Nate Leskovac on a 51-yard bomb and gave the Falcons a 12-0 lead after the second missed extra point of the night.

Five minutes later, Sherwood hit Tyler Evans on a 32-yard pass to go up by three scores. Right before halftime, Spartans kicker Carson Essad hit an 18-yard field goal to score Boardman’s only points of the night and cut the Falcon lead to 16.

Fitch continued the offensive pressure in the second half, scoring two more touchdowns on passes to Jamell James and Donnie Ellis.

For the success, Sherwood credits his offensive line.

“The offensive line did really, really well today,” he said. “Garrett Hogan, Nate John my center, everybody was just doing their thing and getting the job done.”

With the win, Parker, a 2003 Fitch graduate, picked up his first varsity win as head coach.

“Both teams played extremely hard,” Parker said. “I thought our execution, both offensively and defensively, was there tonight. Boardman definitely surprised us a little bit with a lot of their formations, a lot of things they had, and our defense adjusted greatly and got the ball in our hands.”

The game was delayed a day due to weather conditions, and according to Parker, that extra 24 hours greatly helped the offense.

“For our offense, the clear skies, real nice weather, I think that made us a little bit more dynamic,” Parker said. “Our kids will play wherever, whenever and we’re ready now. We’re on a short week, getting ready to go to YSU and taking on Ursuline, but we feel pretty good about what we can do, and every week we’re going to keep getting better and better.”

The Spartans (0-1) look to recover back at home with a matchup against Youngstown East.

Fitch (1-0) takes a trip to Stambaugh Stadium to take on the Irish.

“We’re excited about the challenge,” Parker said. “That’s a tenured coach who has a lot of wins under his belt. My staff and myself are excited about the challenge, and I know anytime these guys get a chance to go against them they’re excited about it.”
