CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Students athletes in Broward County public schools could soon hit the fields to start practicing for fall sports.

If Covid-19 positivity numbers continue to drop, the district’s sports teams can begin fall conditioning on Sept. 21, Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said this week.

In his weekly community update, he said that day is a potential start date for “voluntary” workouts which will be conducted “outdoors only” for the first and second weeks and then gradually phase-in to gyms and weight rooms.

Runcie also said the Broward County school board will discuss on Sept. 22 plans for reopening school campuses for hybrid and full-time learning five days a week.

He added on Twitter: “…if the current trends continue on the path of improvement, we could open sometime this fall. A key checkpoint for us to revisit our status will be after the Labor Day holiday.”

Broward County’s coronavirus positivity rates have been mostly in 4-5 percent this week, but bumped up to 6.6 percent in Tuesday’s data.
