Notable: The Mustangs are 56-2 in league play over the last nine seasons, with seven Section 1 championships.

Quotable: “We’ve got a lot of returning kids with a lot of experience, so I’m very excited about them. Our skill kids are really solid and doing a nice job. I think our defense can be the strength of our team. They’re just strong, fast, quick, aggressive kids, and (we have) experience (there). I’m concerned about our (offensive) line. If we can get it done up front then I think we’re gonna be all right.”— Mustangs coach Jeff Lang

The skinny: The Mustangs return practically intact after another unbeaten run through Section 1 and to the district quarterfinals. They have the premier player in Berks in Nick Singleton, Rutgers recruit Cam’Ron Stewart and Section 1’s top LB in Brandon Strausser. It’s no surprise to see them open the season ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 5A. They’ll have a new QB, multi-sport athlete Connor Maryniak. He’s proven under fire in other sports and should make a smooth transition. Aiden Martin, who started as a freshman in the secondary, will make an impact on both sides of the ball this year. The offensive line will need a rebuild after graduating three starters from what was a solid group. The defense was barely touched by graduation, with seven returning starters; it will be bolstered by the addition of Singleton, who figures to see some time at cornerback. The front seven, with Stewart, Dominic Sheedy and Devonte Phillips up front, and Strausser, Zack Parsons and Trey Rock on the second level, should be the best in the league. This has the potential to be Mifflin’s best team in over a decade. We’ll find out how good when they open Sept. 18 at Wilson.

At the wire: Out in front in Section 1 again, followed by Exeter and Berks Catholic.
