SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — It’s late on a weeknight when Anthony Fabiano plugs his headphones and microphone into his computer.

After working all day, then playing with one of his sons before bed, it’s time for the co-host to record the latest episode of the Revenge of the 90’s podcast. 

“So my confession off the bat is up until yesterday, I had never seen a Bill and Ted movie” said Fabiano.

Every episode, Fabiano and his cross-country co-host, Steve DiMatteo, break down a 90’s flick- like Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.

“I thought it was bonkers and hilarious that one. They use a phone booth as a time machine, but also like phone booths, I’m sure young people who are watching this are probably like, wait, what is that thing?” said Fabiano.

Fabiano and DiMatteo are buddies from Ohio, and started their podcast almost a year ago. The pair grew up in the 90’s and wanted to share the movie nostalgia of their childhood. They’ve made it work but it wasn’t easy. They’re on different coasts, have fulltime jobs, and two little kids.

“It was hard because I’m rushing home, I would get home at 6:30 p.m., and recording at 6:45 was almost impossible,” said Fabiano.

Once COVID happened and the dads were working from home, their new lifestyle actually provided an opportunity to ease some of those struggles, allowing them to step up their game and have dedicated recording days.

“I can accommodate your East Coast time zone, you can accommodate my recording schedule. Let’s do two a week and start pumping out more episodes,” said Fabiano.

From that consistency, they saw their star begin to rise. At one-point they cracked into the top 20 for film review podcasts in the U.S, and hit the top ten in France.

“So we’re just like two random dads that are like ‘hey, let’s talk about 90’s movies,’ and now we’re starting to get listeners and what more can you hope for?” said Fabiano.

They try to theme their movies like choosing the 1997 Kevin Costner bomb The Postman when the postal service was under attack this summer.

“If I do a power ranking of government agencies the post office is like right at the top” said Steve DiMatteo. 

The 90’s were 20-30 years ago, and how content is consume in 2020, is vastly different than it was then. Co-host DiMatteo likes how Fabiano remembers the days of Blockbuster and VHS.  

“It’s a time capsule now, and I want to almost preserve that feeling of the era,” said DiMatteo.

The dream is to do their podcast professionally, but they do it because they love it.

“We’re just sharing our own stories, and hopefully we can help you and your family and friends, create a new memory,” Fabiano said.

And that would be all that and a bag of chips!
