The US Constitution as it was originally written didn’t specify what exactly happens if the President becomes unwell or dies while in office.
It was first tested in 1841 after the death of President William Henry Harrison.
Over the last 169 years through precedent and law, the US now has a protocol for what to do if a President needs to permanently or temporarily hand over power to the Vice President.
