If you were keen to see Powderfinger play at this year’s AFL Grand Final, the popular rock band just dashed your hopes.
The band released a statement via its Twitter account on Saturday afternoon, saying it was “extremely flattered” to be asked to perform at the Gabba but confirming “it is not to be this time”.
With the AFL on Wednesday confirming the Grand Final venue and twilight/night setting, speculation over the game’s marquee entertainment act began.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said he’d “seen an email with heaps of names on it” for potential headline acts.
Powderfinger, which officially retired 10 years ago but reappeared in May this year for a charity performance then announced a new album was on the way, was being touted as the main entertainment event.
But the band on Saturday said it’d declined an offer, adding it would “rather make way for active Queensland artists”.
“Hey Everyone, just to put the rumour mill out of business,” the band’s statement read on Twitter.
“We were extremely flattered to have been asked to perform at the Gabba @AFL GF.
“A very generous and enticing proposal made by Mr Gudinski and the AFL board (thanks ladies & gents) but it is not to be this time folks.
“We’d rather make way for active Queensland artists.
“Might see some of you at the Gabba Oct 24 but we will just have a beer and a pie in hand not guitars.”
Powderfinger then tweeted a list of Queensland-based artists, in alphabetical order, that would be appropriate to perform at the Grand Final.
The band suggested: Amy Shark, Ball Park Music, Busby Marou, Cup Sport, Dune Rats,
Nat Dunn, The Chats, Thelma Plum, Violent Soho and WAAX.
