Nissan started Z range in 1969 and since then has introduced six generations of the two-door sports car. The Japanese carmaker started work on the seventh generation Z and the sports car is expected to launch in 2021. However, Nissan has taken the wraps off Z Proto model to preview the new Z sports car. The prototype was revealed at a virtual event and gives us a good idea about what to expect from the new Nissan Z production model. According to the carmaker, new Nissan Z will be an amalgamation of rich 50 years of Z-heritage and futuristic design elements.

Nissan Z-Proto’s teardrop-shaped headlamps and hood are reminiscent of the first-gen Z that was launched in 1969. Even the bright yellow pearlescent paint and the overall silhouette with coupe-like roof pay a tribute to the original Z. However, the rectangular grille with oval grille fins adds a sporty character to Z-Proto. Nissan noted that Z Proto’s LED DRLs hark back to 1970’s 240ZG while tail lights set within a rectangular black section are inspired from 300ZX. The new Z sports car also gets carbon fibre treatment on the side skirts and front lower lip while 19-inch alloy wheels and dual exhausts compliment the overall aesthetics of the sports car.

Nissan Z Proto gets a new, functional cabin suited for sports cars. There’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a new flat-bottomed steering wheel, a wide touchscreen system, horizontal AC vents. The all-black cabin is spruced up a little by contrasting yellow accents throughout the cabin and sports seats.

Nissan Z Proto is powered by 3.0-litre, twin-turbo, V6 engine that is offered in combination with a six-speed manual gearbox. Given that it is a prototype, the company has not revealed Z Proto’s performance figures but noted that the production model will bring to drivers the excitement of a pure sports car.
