GFW 40, WEM 20

WINTHROP — After suffering its first loss of the season last weekend, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop bounced back on Friday by defeating Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 40-20 in Mid Southeast District football action.

Treay Taylor led the Thunderbirds with 328 yards rushing and three TDs, while Brody Hentges threw for a TD to Ike Case. Nick TenEyck also ran for 96 yards on 11 carries, while Jack Panitzke rushed for 38 yards and two scores on nine carries.

Tristian Kruger led the GFW defense with 6 1/2 tackles and a sack, while Ashton Buboltz had 1 1/2 sacks, Michael Schak had a sack and Nick TenEyck had 5 1/2 total tackles. Easton Taylor and Treay Taylor also each had an interception.

GFW (6-1) is at St. Clair/Loyola on Wednesday for its final game of the regular season.

BLHS 14,

Cedar Mountain 12

MORGAN — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s fourth-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion was enough to get by Cedar Mountain 14-12 on Friday night in 9-man prep football action.

Cooper Freitag completed 10 of 20 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars, while Matt Zeug rushed for 64 yards on 17 carries. Nick Freitag caught both TD passes and had three catches for 53 yards. Caden Kleinschmidt added six catches for 41 yards.

Tanner Mathiowetz led Cedar Mountain’s defense with 14 total tackles and a sack, while Zeug had 9 1/2 tackles.

Cedar Mountain (3-4) is at Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Wednesday to close out its regular season.

TMB 55, Sleepy Eye 13

SLEEPY EYE — Tracy-Milroy-Balaton downed Sleepy Eye 55-13 on Friday night in a Southwest District, East Subdistrict football game.

Arian Saenz led the Indians with 119 yards rushing, while Mason Sellner had an 8-yard TD run. Winsten Nienhaus had a 95-yard kickoff return TD. Erizen Traconis led the Sleepy Eye defense with eight tackles, while Saenz had six tackles and forced a fumble.

Sleepy Eye (1-6) closes out its regular season on Wednesday when it travels to St. James.

MLA 68, Madelia 12

MADELIA — Mountain Lake Area cruised past Madelia 68-12 on Friday night in 9-man South District, West Subdistrict football action.

Carter Forez completed a 52-yard TD pass to Eric Anderson for Madelia’s first TD in the third quarter, while Jed Altenburg ran for a 1-yard TD in the fourth for Madelia’s second score of the game. Forez went completed 9 of 16 passes for 202 yards, while Anderson rushed for 32 yards on 18 carries.

Altenburg led the Madelia defense with 6 1/2 total tackles.

Madelia (0-7) closes out its regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Hector to take on Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart.

Late Thursday

Springfield 32, MCW 27

SHERBURN — Springfield defeated Martin County West in prep football action Thursday.

Brendon Buerkle had 349 yards passing and five touchdowns for the Tigers. Carter Olson caught 11 passes for 137 yards and two scores and Macoy Krick had five receptions for 101 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, Ashton Toll had 17 tackles and Caleb Hauger had 12 tackles. Shane Clemon, Caleb Hauger and Isaak Lothert each had a sack and Sam Pidde finished with two interceptions.

Fischer finishes 1st at Madelia meet for

SM/SE/NUC girls

MADELIA — Clare Fischer finished first for the Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral girls’ cross-country team on Thursday at Madelia, ending with a time of 20:09.14.

Elle Kyllonen also did well for the SM/SE/NUC girls, finishing seventh with a time of 22:03.9.

The Springfield/Cedar Mountain girls’ team ended the meet first overall with an average time of 22:06.11 and three top 10 runners in Emmie McCone (fourth, 21:05.66), Lilly McCone (fifth, 21:11.65) and Katie Thram (21:39.55).

The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop girls’ team saw Madyson Steele finish third overall with a time of 20:57.87, while Abigail Willegal finished 16th (23:22.4) and Ashley Vos took 17th (23:28.86).

On the boys’ side, Mankato Loyola/Cleveland finished first as a team with an average time of 18:45.82. The Springfield/CM boys took second with an average time of 19:03.3.

Leading the Springfield/CM boys was Ben Potter (seventh, 18:29.10), Zack Hensch (eighth, 18:36.9) and Matthew Grobner (ninth, 18:37.2).

For the SM/SE/NUC boys’ team, Noah Christensen led the way with an 11th-place finish (18:42.5). Josiah DeMaris finished fourth for the Madelia/Truman boys with a time of 17:59.6.

Donovan Witte finished 20th with a time of 19:22.1 to lead the Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys.

Women’s Soccer

UWS 4, MLC 1

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College women’s soccer team played first-place UW-Superior (UWS) well, but could not overcome a second-half scoring binge in a 4-1 loss on Friday.

The teams went into the half scoreless, and remained that way until the 59th minute, when Allison Alessi finally broke through with a goal for the Yellowjackets.

UWS built off the momentum created by that score, and added three more goals in the next 15 minutes, capped by a penalty kick goal in the 74th minute.

MLC sophomore Hannah Schroeder put the Knights on the board in the 85th minute with a goal off a pass from Nicole Porter, but it was too late for the Knights to come back.

Schroeder’s goal was her team-leading fifth of the season.

Grace Sievert stopped nine shots in goal for MLC. MLC fell to 3-9-1 on the season and 2-6-1 in UMAC play in defeat.

Men’s Soccer

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team could not slow down UW-Superior (UWS) in a 7-0 loss on Friday.

Protus Babaya set the tone for UWS early, scoring three times in the first half to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 halftime lead.

Isaias Santos was the top offensive threat for MLC with two shots. Josiah Wordell and Xander Heiman each recorded a shot on goal.

UWS out-shot the Knights 27-5 overall, including a 15-2 edge in shots on goal.

MLC fell to 2-10-0 on the season and 1-8-0 in UMAC play in defeat.

College Volleyball

Northland 3, MLC 2

ASHLAND, Wisc. — Northland held off Martin Luther College in five sets of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball action on Friday night, winning 14-25, 25-13, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13.

Kelsey Birschbach and Lauren Paulsen led the Knights with 16 kills apiece, while Paige Biesterfeld added five kills. Kylie Wolf had 23 set assists for MLC also, whule Anna Treder added 18 set assists and Katelyn Aswege had 36 digs. Birschbach also had 23 digs.

MLC dropped to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in UMAC play with the loss.

MLC men finish 2nd at St. Boni Invite

ST. BONIFACIUS — The Martin Luther College men’s cross country team took second at the St. Boni Invite hosted by Crown College on Friday.

The Knights finished the race with a total team score of 43 points, trailing only first-place Saint John’s (33 points), and defeating each of the other three UMAC schools in attendance.

Ryan Maertz (28:46) took sixth place in the 8K race to lead the Knights, while Camden Sulzle (29:10) joined him with a top 10 finish in ninth place.

MLC women take 2nd at St. Boni Invite

ST. BONIFACIUS — The Martin Luther College women’s cross country team made the most of its final tune-up before the conference championships with a second-place finish at the St. Boni Invite on Friday.

The Knights finished with 45 total points at the event (hosted by Crown College), which was second only to Carleton (33 points), and good enough to defeat the other three UMAC schools in attendance.

Maya Habben (25:08), Abigail Buege (25:10) and Hannah Kratz (25:13) led the way by finishing fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
