On Friday, two more games were moved or called off at the last moment.
Winner’s game at Mount Vernon/Plankinton has been postponed to 6 p.m. Monday in Mount Vernon due to the virus impacting the schools involved in the game.
The Miller/Highmore-Harrold at Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central game has been canceled, according to Wessington Springs Athletic Director Jason Kolousek. The game was slated to be played in Wessington Springs.
“It’s an issue at Miller/Highmore-Harrold,” Kolousek said. “They didn’t go into detail.”
The Blackhawks have no more open weeks because they filled their only open date with Canton on Oct. 2.
“We were looking for possibly if someone else was in a similar situation of playing (today), but we are not having much luck,” he said.
Wagner, which had quickly scheduled a football game with Elk Point-Jefferson earlier this week after COVID-19 impacted their original game with Stanley County, shut down all activities for the weekend due to the virus. Elk Point-Jefferson will instead play West Sioux (Iowa) on Saturday.
Chamberlain at Lead-Deadwood in Lead has been canceled, according to Cubs’ Activities Director Bill Kurtz.
The teams tried to reschedule it later in the season, but “we can’t find a date that works for them and one that works for us,” Kurtz said. “Our bye is in two weeks and they have a game scheduled.”
Kurtz said Chamberlain may try to schedule another opponent during its bye week on Oct. 9, “but I can’t tell you for sure because at that point in time, who knows where everybody else is going to be at.”
Earlier in the week, Avon announced its football game against Gayville-Volin has been postponed to Monday, Oct. 12 in Avon. Gayville-Volin said this week it was postponing all extracurricular activities through Oct. 5 due to faculty, staff and students who either had the virus or needed to quarantine.
One football game joined the schedule on Friday, with Menno/Marion traveling to Scotland. The Razorbacks had missed last Friday’s game with Baltic due to COVID-19, and the Highlanders added the nearby foes in what was previously their open week on the schedule.
Scotland was scheduled to play Gayville-Volin on Oct. 2 and that game has been canceled.
Watertown High School will continue online learning from Sept. 28-Oct. 2, forcing activities to be postponed or canceled. As a result, Mitchell High School athletics are also affected by the changes.
The Mitchell at Watertown volleyball match on Sept. 29 has been postponed to Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m., in Watertown.
Watertown’s cross-country invitational on Thursday, Oct. 1 has been canceled. The Kernels will now compete at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls on Oct. 1.
