The Reserve Bank of India’s rate tightening alongside a weaker rupee could be the “optimal” policy response to restore the country’s external balances, HSBC Securities said in a note

“While the RBI started hiking rates in May 2022, it was only in September that it moved to a two-pronged strategy of higher rates and a weaker rupee,” said Pranjul Bhandari, chief economist of at HSBC Securities and Capital Markets (India).

“As such, we think India is now giving the optimal policy response. The challenge will be to continue on this path.”

Punjab, Haryana CMs fail to reach agreement on SYL canal row

The contentious Sutlej Yamuna Link has been a bone of contention between the two states for several decades.

Punjab has been maintaining that the quantum of water flowing through Ravi and Beas rivers had come down considerably, and therefore, it was seeking reassessment of the waters’ volume.

Haryana has been seeking completion of the SYL canal to get its share of 3.5 million acre feet of the river waters, and also that Punjab should comply with the 2002 and 2004 Supreme Court orders for the completion of the canal for bringing its share of the waters.

Currently, it is getting 1.62 million acre feet of the Ravi-Beas waters.

Euro zone posts record trade deficit in August amid soaring energy prices

The euro zone posted in August its largest trade deficit since it expanded to 19 countries in 2015, as high energy prices boosted its import bill, official estimates released on Friday showed.

The European Union’s statistics office Eurostat said that the euro zone’s balance for trade in goods with the rest of the world in August was in the red by nearly 51 billion euros ($49.7 billion), the highest deficit ever recorded by the bloc since Lithuania joined it in January 2015 to become its 19th member.

The deficit ballooned from July when it stood at 34 billion euros, marking the tenth consecutive month of a negative balance, in what is a major shift for the trade bloc which has historically recorded large surpluses.

BCCI could lose Rs 955 crore if ICC doesn’t get tax exemption from Govt for hosting 2023 World Cup

India is to host next year’s 50-over showpiece in October-November.

Tax surcharge refers to “an additional charge, fee, or tax that is added to the cost of a good or service beyond the initially quoted price”. A surcharge is often added to an existing tax and is not included in the stated price of the good or service.

As per ICC norm, the host nation is required to get tax exemption from the government for hosting tournaments organised by the global body.

Since India’s tax rules don’t allow such exemptions, the BCCI has already lost close to Rs 193 crore (USD 23.5 million) as the government didn’t exempt tax surcharge for hosting the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup. The BCCI is still fighting that case in the ICC tribunal.
