In a vote that ended Oct. 2 and 3, readers of The Gaston Gazette and The Shelby Star selected the area’s sixth Athlete of the Week nominees. The group included a pair of the week’s top high school football players, as well as a boys and girls athlete from fall sports including volleyball, boys soccer, boys and girls cross country, as well as girls golf and tennis.
Each week, area high school coaches can submit a list of standout performers for their team from the previous week’s games. If your child’s name – or anyone from your child’s team – does not appear on the list, please encourage your coach to email their submissions to jhughes@gastongazette.com.

Honor roll: Vote for last week’s top fall sports athletes in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln
Defensive Player of the Week
Jaycob Neely, Forestview
Much like he’s done this season on the gridiron, those voting for Forestview’s Jaycob Neely left no doubt who they believe was Week 5’s top defensive player. After receiving more than 5,000 votes, the Jaguar linebacker earned the Gazette+Star area Defensive Player of the Week award for Week 6.
Against rival Ashbrook, Neely led his team with 11 tackles, one in the Green Wave backfield. He also caught a touchdown pass in a winning effort.
This season, the Forestview standout has 56 tackles to go with four sacks, two interceptions — one of them returned for a 69-yard touchdown last week against Kings Mountain — along with a forced fumble.

Offensive Player of the Week
Trace Gilmore, West Lincoln
Earning more than half of the overall vote, West Lincoln’s Trace Gilmore claimed the Gazette+Star area Offensive Player of the Week award for his effort in Week 6.
In a 20-14 loss to Maiden, he rushed for 109 yards on 17 attempts. His third game with 100 yards or more this fall, Gilmore’s 486 yards and three touchdowns are second on the team.
Boys Athlete of the Week
Agustin Meza, Highland Tech
The Highland Tech junior goalkeeper earned 63.4% of the vote last week to earn boys Athlete of the Week honors.
Aided by goals courtesy of Jacob Hoskins, Ryan Willman and Nate Cheatham, Meza earned a shutout in goal for the Rams in a 3-0 win over Thomas Jefferson. He has helped Highland Tech to three wins in the four games since, their only loss a 4-2 setback to Southern Piedmont 1A/2A leader Shelby.
Girls Athlete of the Week
Holly Hackney, South Point
The South Point senior volleyball player earned girls Athlete of the Week honors after receiving 742 votes, outpacing the likes of East Lincoln cross country dynamo Macy Parks, as well as fellow volleyball standouts Kamden Dalton of Lincoln Charter and Kings Mountain’s Aaliyah Byers.
Hackney was awarded for a solid week on the volleyball court in which she had 16 digs, 23 assists and seven serve receptions in her team’s 3-1 win over Forestview. She followed that effort with four kills in a 3-0 win over North Gaston.
