Washington Huskies sports is back on for the rest of 2020.
After initially canceling the sports calendar for the remainder of the calendar year in August due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Pac-12 announced Thursday the resumption of its football, basketball and winter sports seasons after taking into account “material changes to testing capabilities, the prevalence of COVID-19 and cardiac issues, along with updated state and local health official guidance,” according to a news release.
For schools that have received the “necessary state and local health approvals,” the football season will begin Nov. 6, with women’s and men’s basketball starting on Nov. 25, per the release.
The other winter sports will also begin on dates consistent with the NCAA season dates for those sports.
“I’m extremely excited for our student-athletes, coaches, staff and Husky nation with today’s news,” UW Athletics Director Jen Cohen said in a statement. “Our students have demonstrated their commitment to a healthy return to sport the last few months while back in our footprint and I’m so happy they can now take this a step further and have the opportunity to compete this fall. I’m just so proud of the way they have handled this situation and the resilience they have shown each step of the way. We couldn’t be more pleased with today’s decision by the Pac-12 CEO Group and would like to thank the Pac-12 Medical Advisory Committee for everything they’ve done to get us to this point.
“I would also like to recognize our medical team, as well as strength & condition staff at the UW for their tireless work the last six months which has allowed us the ability to now return to competition in the safest environment possible.”
The Huskies’ football schedule will be known soon, with the Pac-12 saying the schedule will be released “in the coming days.”
First-year head football coach Jimmy Lake said on his radio show Wednesday that his team will begin practicing next Tuesday as part of the ramp-up back to football. Football players returned to campus last weekend and are currently completing a seven-day quarantine.
Lake and several football players tweeted Thursday evening their excitement over the resumption of play.
“Dawgs are ready!” Lake tweeted.

UW men’s head basketball coach Mike Hopkins said the decision to resume the Pac-12 2020 sports calendar is “incredible news for college basketball.”
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the Pac-12 CEOs re-evaluating their course based on all the steps that have been made,” Hopkins said. ‘They’ve always put the student-athlete’s well-being first in their decision-making and because of the new protocols put in place, we are going to be able to compete and get back to a sense of normalcy.”
There will be no fans permitted at Pac-12 games in 2020. The decision to close competition to the public “will be revisited based upon health and safety considerations in January 2021.”
