Baldwin County High has suspended athletic practice and competition in multiple sports, including football, after a dozen suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases among the school’s student-athletes.

The sports currently involved are football, cross country and swimming.

Superintendent Eddie Tyler released the news Monday afternoon. Practice and competition in those sports will cease until Sept. 9, he said.

Tyler said he agreed with principal Craig Smith’s decision on the matter.

“As these cases cover several sports, co-ed teams and age groups, we do not see a specific causation,” Tyler said in a released statement. “We are aware the coronavirus is in our schools, at our practice fields, within our communities and at home. We do not know if these athletes spread the virus through their contact at practice or through their contact outside of campus but out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students and staff, we will take a break and resume after Labor Day.”

The Baldwin County football team lost to Mary G. Montgomery on Aug. 21 and was idle last week. The Tigers were scheduled to host Blount this Friday in their Class 6A, Region 1 opener. The Leopards, just coming off a quarantine themselves, have yet to play a game. Baldwin County’s next scheduled game is Sept. 11 at Saraland, two days after the team is scheduled to come off quarantine. Smith said that game would not be played either.

That would leave the Tigers 0-3 overall, 0-2 in Class 6A, Region 1 after a pair of forfeit losses.

“As I have said throughout this process, we reserve the right to change or implement new policies as we see fit to protect our students, staff and community,” Tyler said in his statement. “There are no policy changes to announce at this time beyond this one instance at BCHS, and I do not expect this will extend to other schools or programs.

“I am pleased with how our protocols have worked thus far, and we will continue to spray our facilities and implement our standard mitigation protocols while actively monitoring case reports.”

The Baldwin County release did not further break down in COVID numbers due to federal privacy laws.

“This only pertains to Baldwin County High School and does not include any other school or athletic groups in the county,” he said. “We do not have a set number on possible/confirmed cases when making this determination but rather leave it up to the principals and athletic directors to decide what is best for their school and athletes.”

The Baldwin County football team joins B.C. Rain as Coastal Alabama teams currently shut down by the coronavirus.
