Paan provides the right finale to a lavish Indian meal. Plain paan, flavoured paan or chocolate paan, we love all of them, however there’s nothing like Banarasi paan. This paan has gained its personal distinct stature and has been the undisputed winner amongst all paan classes. The traditional Amitabh Bachchan music ‘Khayike paan Banaras wala’ simply added a feather to its cap.  And now, Banarasi paan lastly bought the popularity it deserved. It has been awarded the Geographical Indication tag. 

Geographical Indication tag (or GI) tag and is accorded to merchandise which have traits which can be distinctive to the fatherland. Whether it’s the topography of the area or the sources, and even the tradition, some meals are tough to copy elsewhere, and that is why are distinctive.

Banarasi paan is a potpourri of flavours and textures. It is made by combining areca nuts, tobacco, slaked lime, rose petals (gulkand), typically, silver foil (varakh) and extra in contemporary betel leaf (kattha). The speciality of Banarasi paan is that it’s made contemporary by the paan avenue distributors, one thing that we do not get to see all over the place.

In affiliation with NABARD (National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development) Uttar Pradesh, the GI tag was given to Banarasai paan amongst 4 different meals from Banaras. They are – Banarasi Langda Mango, Ramnagar Bhanta (Brinjal), and Adamchini Rice. But the choice to award Banarasi paan is being hailed by all.
