Writer and photographer Susan Kuklin is the creator of the award-winning nonfiction guide, Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out. The guide is banned from college library cabinets in 11 college districts within the U.S.

The guide compiles Kulkin’s images of — and interviews with — transgender and nonbinary teenagers and younger adults. The tales these teenagers inform are uncooked and heartfelt. They describe their experiences transitioning and mirror on their identities.

Kulkin’s work typically focuses on human rights points; she has written about subjects starting from immigration to the AIDS epidemic. Beyond Magenta, revealed in 2014, has been on the American Library Association’s (ALA) list of most books most often challenged a variety of occasions since 2015, cited for “for LGBTQIA+ content and because it was considered to be sexually explicit.”

On how everyone seems to be human
