MINERVA — The Beaver Local volleyball team opened the season with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-17 win over Minerva on Monday.
“It’s great to witness the season get under way,” Beaver Local coach Sarah Lowe said. “These young ladies have been there for each other since March, pushing one another to stay positive.”
Karlee Furman had two kills, 14 assists, six digs and nine points for the Beavers. Grace Hill had three kills and two blocks; Kodi Kinsey eight digs and five points; Eli Kolkowski six kills and four blocks; Erin O’Hara two kills and three digs; Leah Riccardo four kills and six points; Brooke Talbot three aces,seven kills, nine assists, four digs and seven points; Cierra Thurik four digs and seven points; Briar Wolski two kills; and Emma Roberts eight points.
“Although the past month and future weeks may bring uncertainty, one thing I know for sure is the leadership of this team will keep them moving forward strong,” Lowe said. ” I look forward to what this season lies ahead, with our eight returning letterman and underclassman filling key roles.”
Beaver Local also won the junior varsity match, 25-9, 6-24. The Beavers were led by Emma Joseph with thee aces 10 points and seven assists, Briar Wolski seven kills, Julia Hockman three kills and Madison Lowe nine points.
The Beavers are back in action at home against St. Clairsville with a freshman match starting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Wellsville 3, Edison 0
WELLSVILLE–The Wellsville volleyball team rolled to a 25-13, 25-12, 25-15 victory over Edison in season-opening action Monday.
The Tigers got a balanced effort across the board. Emma Smith recorded 17 kills, while Emily McNicol had four aces and 18 assists and Aubri Ramsey 11 digs.
Also for Wellsville, Meaghan Nixon had 10 points, while Jenna McNicol had three aces and 21 digs and Greta Cartwright had two aces and 15 assists.
Gia Pucci helped round things out for the Tigers with five kills. Alana Amato added four kills and two blocks.
In jv action, Wellsville won 25-18, 25-21. Paige Green had seven assists for the Tigers. Brooke Hackney had two aces and six kills.
Wellsville opens Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference action today at Lisbon.
Heartland 3, Ursuline 0
COLUMBIANA — The Heartland Christian varsity volleyball team captured its first win of the season by downing Youngstown Ursuline, 25-7, 25-12, 25-10, Monday.
Leaders for Heartland were Emma Hall with 20 points and seven aces; Makalya Osborn 21 kills, 16 points, six aces and nine digs; and Lydia Wilson 25 assists, five kills and 12 digs.
The Lions (1-1) will host Mineral Ridge at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Ursuline won the junior varsity match, 22-25, 25-23, 25-12.
For Heartland, Elise Wintersteller had 12 points, four aces and four kills and Bella Drokin five points, two aces, seven assists, seven digs and three kills.
East Liverpool 3, Steubenville 0
STEUBENVILLE –Freshman Kyia White collected seven kills and two blocks as East Liverpool swept Steubenville, 25-20, 26-24, 25-19, Monday.
Sharnae Wilson contributed six kills and three blocks, while Alexa Aldrich and Gabby George each had eight assists.
The Potters will play at Crestview on Wednesday.
East Liverpool also won the junior varsity match, 27-29, 25-15, 25-6. For the Beavers, Riley Cox had eight aces and 10 points and Dalani Ice 11 assists and 3three points.
East Liverpool won the freshman match, 25-8, 23-25, 25-19, as Kenzie Walker had nine kills and five points, Gracie Murray had 10 assists and five points and Rylee Handley six digs and three kills.
West Branch 3, Western Reserve 1
BELOIT–The West Branch volleyball team recorded a 25-15, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22 victory over Western Reserve Monday.
Sydney Mercer powered the Warriors (2-0) with 17 kills, 11 points and three aces.
Also for West Branch, Adele Peters had 16 points and four aces.
Hannah Rush added 14 assists, while Riley Tuel added nine kills and 15 assists. Mikalyn Fitts had nine blocks. Claire Brunner led the defense with 10 digs.
The West Branch jv team also improved to 2-0 with a 25-22, 17-25, 25-22 victory.
Taiva Hagan had 10 points and two aces for the Warriors. Skyler Greeneisen added five kills, while Myla Lamp had six assists.
