SAN FRANCISCO — President Biden signed a short-term authorities funding invoice on Thursday, avoiding a possible authorities shutdown and pushing into subsequent yr debates about wartime funding for Ukraine and Israel.

Biden’s approval got here a day after the Senate overwhelmingly approved the stop-gap spending bill. The measure, designed by new House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., funds 4 federal businesses till Jan. 19, 2024 and the remaining till Feb 2, 2024. The aim is to provide Congress extra time to barter long-term spending payments.

The president is in San Francisco for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, so the invoice got here out West for his signature. What the measure does not embody is any of the funding Biden has mentioned is urgently wanted for Ukraine and Israel.

But the laws retains the lights on, and regardless of earlier reservations, as soon as it was clear it could go Congress, the White House signaled Biden would signal it.

At this level there is no such thing as a clear path for these funding requests to even come up for a vote.
