Bonnaroo founder Ashley Capps and his employees have been hit hard by the pandemic. He wants restriction in place now so the country can open sooner.

It could be argued that AC Entertainment founder Ashley Capps has been impacted by the shutdown of businesses and shows more than most business owners.
Capps’ nationwide entertainment giant – which puts on festivals like the Bonnaroo and Big Ears, and runs musical and theatrical programming at historic venues like Knoxville’s Bijou and Tennessee Theatres – has been shuttered since the middle of March. Roughly two-thirds of his 65 employees have been furloughed with “nothing to do.”
Monday, he was one of at least 30 people who spoke before the Knox County Commission, which was set to vote on a resolution that would condemn the county board of health for its temporary safety orders like a mask mandate and an 11 p.m. restaurant and bar closing time.
Short-term pain for a long-term gain, the Knoxville native reargued, echoing the reasoning made by members of the health board’s medical experts as measures were put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Capps, speaking after dozens who opposed the board’s COVID-19 safety measures, asked commissioners to “think about this logically.”
“This past six months has been a very sad, painful and soul-crushing experience for us,” he said about his business. “And we want nothing more for it to return and return fast. But it’s not that easy.”
Capps said in order for the entertainment industry to get going – for concerts of all sizes to come back and festivals to be celebrated – arts patrons and his employees need to be able to gather and work safely.
“We all want the same thing, and that’s why I think it’s so important to put our differences aside and really think about this logically,” he said.
“Decisions about public health should not be about politics and popularity,” he said. “They should be driven by the discipline, knowledge and commitment of those who have dedicated themselves to this field and a lifetime of learning.”
