New Delhi: Breast cancer refers to a condition characterised by abnormally multiplying cells in the breast tissue resulting in the development of a potentially fatal tumour. Although largely curable, breast cancer cases in the past few decades have multiplied drastically making it the most common form of cancer affecting women in metropolitan India.

While mammograms are the one-stop solution for diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy are primary forms of treatment. However, patients often feel that getting treated for the condition on time is where their hustle concludes. Turns out, the battle for a healthy and long life continues after the surgery as well, and your key weapon for this is your diet and lifestyle.

In an effort to understand what one must eat after chemotherapy for breast cancer, Times Now Digital connected with Nutritionist Ryan Fernando, Founder of QUA Nutrition. And in an interaction, the expert revealed dietary and lifestyle tips to support a health life after surgery.  

“Many of your eating problems will ameliorate once you’ve completed cancer treatment, and you’ll notice a considerable improvement. Keep in mind, however, that while healthy nutrition alone will not prevent cancer from returning, it can help you rebuild strength, regain weight lost during treatment, and improve your overall health,” he explained.

Mr Fernando continued to share some pro tips and nutrition strategies to support survival and a healthy life after undergoing chemotherapy.

  1. Work towards getting small and regular meals.
  2. Increase the amount of fruits you consume (especially vitamin C, vitamin E rich and all citrus fruits such as orange sweet lime, custard apple, guava etc.).
  3. Choose complex carbohydrates such as vegetables and whole grains.
  4. Try to get your share of proteins from lean meat, poultry, and low-fat dairy products. Red and processed meats must be consumed in moderation.
  5. Baked goods, sugar, sweetened beverages, fruit juices, sweets, and fried foods should all be avoided.
  6. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water – two-three litres per day – or as prescribed by a doctor.
  7. Read food labels and avoid items containing “high fructose corn syrup.”Avoid all forms of alcohol, smoking, and tobacco products.
  8. Maintain a healthy circadian rhythm by sleeping for seven to nine hours each night.
  9. Keep yourself physically active by exercising on a regular basis to re-establish your strength.

Additionally, the expert spoke about eating habits of a cancer survivor and said that patients should be monitored throughout the continuum of care due to variations in specific illnesses and treatment strategies.
