Brentford started life at their new Brentford Community Stadium with a penalty shootout victory over 10-man Wycombe in the Carabao Cup first round.

After a 1-1 draw, Luke Daniels’ save from Scott Kashket proved vital before Marcus Forss sent the Bees through.

Ethan Pinnock had headed in from a free-kick to give Brentford the lead.

Wycombe played most of the second half with 10 men after Dominic Gape was sent off but Daryl Horgan smashed home from 10 yards to send the game to penalties.

The equaliser owed much to the opportunism of Kashket, who seized on a mistake by Pinnock to set up Horgan, who joined the Chairboys from Hibernian on Wednesday.

And the 10 men almost won it late on when Daniels had to tip a Fred Onyedinma effort around the post.

Brentford, who lost to Fulham in the Championship play-off final last month, looked to be cruising towards the second round after Gape was shown a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Jan Zamburek.

But they were unable to add to their lead as Ryan Allsop saved summer signing Ivan Toney’s snap-shot, while a curling Sergi Canos effort clipped the outside of the post.

Wycombe’s Nick Freeman and Bees midfielder Mathias Jensen both blazed over during the shootout, but Daniels’ low save to his right to deny Kashket proved the difference.
