It was nothing short of heroic. Caleb Williams came into the Red River Showdown in the middle of the second quarter with the Oklahoma Sooners trailing by 18 points, and the moment didn’t look too bright for him.
With the Cotton Bowl buzzing, Williams led the Oklahoma Sooners on a 10-play 58-yard drive that ended in a field goal. It included a big 24-yard catch and run by Jeremiah Hall to get the drive going, but Williams showed poise as the Texas Longhorns’ defense got after him.
Hollywood couldn’t have come up with a better script in the second half as the Sooners, led by their true freshman, came back from 18 points down to beat the Longhorns. For his performance, Williams has been showered with accolades, including Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Over at Athlon Sports, Steven Lassan had some praise to shower upon the Oklahoma Sooners’ freshman quarterback naming him the “True Freshman of the Week.”
Williams sparked Oklahoma’s comeback win over Texas by connecting on 15 of 24 throws for 211 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 88 yards and a score. – Lassan
In Williams’ most meaningful action since 2019 (his senior season was canceled due to COVID), he showed that he was up to the task of leading an Oklahoma Sooners offense that comes with high expectations.
Though Lincoln Riley isn’t ready to name a starter for week seven vs. the TCU Horned Frogs, it would be a surprise if Caleb Williams isn’t given a shot to lead the team after his performance in the Red River Showdown.
Williams didn’t have a perfect game. There are some things to work on, but he showed enough to warrant an extended look with the first-team offense this week in practice and against the Horned Frogs on Saturday.
