NEW MATAMORAS — A pair of teams that have been steamrolling their opposition will face off Friday night when Cameron travels across the Ohio river and heads south down Route 7 for a matchup of early season unbeatens with Frontier.
Both Coach Tim Brown’s 2-0 record Dragons and Russ Morris’ 3-0 Cougars have been getting it done on both sides of the football with Cameron outscoring their opponents by a 94-28 margin and Frontier having their way with their three victims by a 158-20 count.
The Dragons are coming off a 34-22 victory over West Virginia small-school rival Valley last Friday while the Cougars easily dismantled Bridgeport on Saturday by a 50-6 margin.
“Overall, we have been playing very well, but there are still some things that we need to clean up,” Morris said.
“These kids are veterans and they have worked hard all off-season and have continued to work hard during the season. The effort has been great, but there are always things you can do better.
“I really don’t think we have played our best football yet, but this is going to be a big test this week.”
Freshman quarterback Colson Wichterman has been a dual threat for Cameron and is coming off an impressive performance against the Lumberjacks. Wichterman completed 10 of 16 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown while rushing nine times for 37 yards and three more scores in the victory.
The Dragons finished with 389 total yards of offense while allowing only 210. And while Cameron fumbled six times on the night, they were able to pounce on five of those loose footballs.
“We managed not to turn the ball over in week one and we haven’t done it at all in practice, so the fact we put the ball on the carpet six times last week has us shaking our heads a little bit,” Brown said. “I was not expecting that at all, but it was just one of those nights. I honestly believe we have it under control now and I know that we are not going to be able to do that again this week and still win.”
Frontier wasted little time taking care of the Bulldogs last week, grabbing a 16-0 lead before Bridgeport was able to run a single play on offense and racking up 30 points in the opening quarter alone.
Quarterback JD Schmidt was 9 of 15 for 129 yards for three touchdowns through the air while adding a rushing touchdown. The Cougars finished with 210 yards on the ground led by Slade Amos (13-89-td), Noah Barnhart (12-42-2td) and Tanner Biller (3-63-td) while Bills and Breckin Hoff added touchdown catches.
The Frontier offense has not scored less than 42 points in any of its initial three games while the defense has allowed just one touchdown each in those three games and one two-point conversion. The Cougars’ defense limited Bridgeport to just 123 total yards of offense, only 27 of that coming on the ground.
“We watched them on film, and they are definitely a good football team,” Brown said. “A team that we remember beat us last year. They run a lot of wing T with some spread and they have speedy receivers who catch the ball on the perimeter well.
“They also do a nice job running the football and are very diverse. They are going to be very hard to slow down. Their defense is sound with some good athletes and we know we are going to have to put together four quarters of good football to beat them. I am sure that both teams are looking for big wins to help propel them towards the playoffs and I know they are wanting to go 6-0 in their shortened season. It’s a big game, but with the uncertainty of everything they are all big games this year. Nothing is promised and nobody really knows what lies ahead.”
