‘Zoo Story’ plays outdoors

Cotuit Center for the Arts’ two-man outdoor production of Edward Albee’s “The Zoo Story” has been extended for an extra weekend of socially distanced performances. The one-act dark comedy is the area’s first local live theater show since the March pandemic shutdown, and this production is exemplary, with strong performances and direction. It’s about two men who meet on a park bench, and their interactions are open to interpretation — with a timely push toward ending a privileged man’s complacency toward others’ troubles being one of them.

When: 6:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and Sept. 24-26

Where: Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Route 28 (front lawn)

Admission: Free (donations requested)

Reservations (required) and information: artsonthecape.org

Hopkins, Rizzio to perform at Payomet

“Red Roots Americana” performer/songwriter Thea Hopkins and Americana singer-songwriter Monica Rizzio will both perform concerts this weekend as part of Payomet’s Drive-In Live series. Hopkins, a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard, released her latest album in 2018. She was since nominated for a 2019 Indigenous Music Award in the folk category, an international competition; and was selected by the Western Arts Alliance as a 2019 Native Launchpad Artist, a three-year artist development program. Hopkins performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the grand opening of its new theater complex. Texas-born Rizzio is a “washashore cowgirl” who co-founded the Cape’s Vinegrass festival and production company, plus West Bend Music. She sang for a decade with the Tripping Lily group before going solo and has toured nationally, producing her latest album, “Sunshine Is Free,” in Nashville.
