CHANDIGARH: To keep children fit and healthy, ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) has allotted RS 49.4 lakh to UT education department to conduct sports and physical activities for students of elementary and secondary level.
An outlay of Rs 16.50 lakh was estimated for sports grants at elementary level, that is till Class VIII. Out of which Rs 5.65 lakh has been allotted for sports and physical education at primary level in 113 schools while Rs 10.5 lakh has been allotted for sports and physical education at upper primary level in 105 schools.
An amount of Rs 33.25 lakh was estimated for sports and physical education at 93 secondary and 40 senior secondary schools.
It has been stated that the utilisation of the funds for sports and physical education has to be in accordance with the detailed guidelines issued by MHRD on December 24, 2018.
With the money, age-appropriate sports equipment for government schools may be procured according to the guidelines issued by MHRD. Procuring of items that is not in the MHRD list should be certified by the head of the school.
Also the money can be used for organising age-appropriate sports activities in the schools.
Schools have been given freedom to include traditional and regional games as well. Further, they can use the money for maintaining workable stock position of sports equipment, periodic record may be maintained including workable equipment, repairable equipment, write-off equipment and new items to be purchased to maintain the required stock position.
One responsible person, who can be the physical education teacher as well, can be given the responsibility to take care of the equipment and maintaining the stock position of sports equipment in the school, MHRD said.
According to education department, the above interventions are meant for improving the PGI indicators and contributes to overall improvement in mental and physical development of the student.
