CHAMPION — School district officials say Champion High School will go to all-remote learning for grades 9-12 today through Monday after the district reported four additional positive COVID-19 cases.
These cases are related to cases announced last week in the school’s football program.
Superintendent John Grabowski said on the district Facebook page Monday that all high school and middle school sporting activities have been canceled through Oct. 5.
He noted anyone who has been exposed is being asked to quarantine.
Champion middle and elementary schools will remain on the district’s hybrid schedules, as the cases have been isolated within the high school programs only, Grabowski said.
In Monday’s health and wellness update, Grabowski said all students are expected to continue remote learning unless they are ill.
“Out of an abundance of caution, practices and games will be canceled through at least Oct. 5 while students complete their quarantines,” he said.
The football game between Champion and Brookfield was postponed last Friday.
Two positive COVID-19 tests and a third student-athlete exhibiting symptoms caused the district to postpone not just football, but boys and girls soccer.
Postponed were home soccer games against Newton Falls and soccer matches on Saturday against Lakeview.
Officials last week indicated three football coaches had tested positive for COVID-19.
Grabowski said the district learned of four new COVID-19 cases related to the original exposure within the football program.
In a statement, the school district said any student who could be affected is being contacted and will be quarantined from school and all athletic events for the required 14 days.
The Champion and Newton Falls football game scheduled for Oct. 2 also has been postponed. The game tentatively has been rescheduled to Oct. 30 pending playoff status.
