More details were provided Thursday regarding Colorado high school sports modifications in the coming year.
The Colorado High School Activities Association released the required changes for various sports. Administrators still need to determine the changes and schedules for some sports. Those will be released at a later date.
All of the sports will have shorter seasons with fewer contests, though others require more adjustments to ensure student safety.
Here is an overview of changes teams can expect for the coming year:
Football
Football season, to be played in the spring, will only feature seven games for each classification. Only eight teams per classification will qualify for the postseason, which will be determined by the CHSAA Seeding Index.
4A and 5A teams will play regularly scheduled games for weeks 4-10. 3A teams will play the games scheduled for weeks 5-11.
1A, 2A and 8-man teams will play the games scheduled for weeks 4-10, while 6-man teams will play their games scheduled for weeks 3-9.
Practices will begin on Feb. 22, and teams must hold nine practices prior to competition. Games can begin March 4 and run until April 17. The postseason will begin several days later with the state championships set to take place by May 8.
Wrestling
Wrestling teams will begin practices on Jan. 4 and hold meets starting on Jan. 7. Teams may only participate in seven duals and spend seven total days at tournaments. The tournaments cannot have more than eight teams.
CHSAA condensed the postseason, too, which will have two-day regional contests. These will begin Feb. 27. Competition will feature 16-wrestler brackets and the top two from each weight class qualify for the state tournament.
State, which is typically a three-day event, will be reduced to a single-day event on March 6. The brackets will feature eight wrestlers per weight class.
Basketball
Class 1A through 3A will play 13 games during their winter season with a 24-team state tournament bracket.
Class 4A and 5A teams will play 16 games with a 32-team bracket. Both tournaments will be single elimination.
Practice can begin on Jan. 4 with games beginning on Jan. 7. Teams will play through Feb. 13. The postseason begins in the second half of February. CHSAA will hold the state championship over three days from March 4-6.
Girls and boys volleyball
Both seasons will consist of 16 games maximum and 12 games minimum. The minimum requirement for postseason qualification may be adjusted due to COVID-19 if a team obtains a waiver from CHSAA.
The season, through the end of the postseason, will be 10 weeks long and only 12 players may compete on a team.
Regionals will only feature 24 teams with league champions still guaranteed entrance. The state tournament will feature eight teams and be played over two days in a single elimination format.
Girls volleyball can begin practice on March 1, competitions on March 4 and the postseason will end by April 24. CHSAA has not specified a date for the end of the regular season.
Boys volleyball, however, can begin practice March 26 and start games on March 29. The state tournament will take place mid-June.
Baseball
Changes to the baseball season include a reduced season for all classifications, which may start practice on March 26. Competitions may begin on March 29.
CHSAA specifies 1A teams must play nine games to qualify for the postseason and at most 13 games in the regular season. It will have a 16-team regional/state bracket.
Class 2A through 5A can play up to 16 regular season games and need to play 13 games minimum to qualify for state.
Sixteen teams will play for the 2A regional and state tournament.
Class 3A through 5A will have 24 teams in their respective regionals. The higher-seeded teams will host three-team regional tournaments. Eight teams will advance to the double-elimination state tournament.
The regular season will end and the postseason will begin at various times based on the team’s classification. All contests will end by June 26.
CHSAA announced this week it received approval from the state to tentatively hold all sports in the upcoming academic year.
The plan includes four seasons that are roughly seven weeks long. The first season began Monday with boys golf. CHSAA also scheduled an expected activity suspension from Oct. 18 through Jan. 3, 2021. Medical data indicates another surge of COVID-19, which is the reason for the moratorium.
In its announcement, CHSAA said the requirements and tentative schedules are subject to change due to the fluid nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.
