With the fall season fast approaching, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference continues to work at finding a safe way to bring high school sports back to the state. After meeting on Friday morning, the CIAC Board of Control put out a new timeline for fall sports this afternoon.
The governing body has requested that the Connecticut Department of Public Health allow member schools to resume their non-contact conditioning cohorts as early as Monday. Since July 6, CIAC had allowed athletes and coaches to work out in limited numbers, but last Friday, CIAC chose to pause all in-person fall activities after receiving a DPH letter that among other things, recommended that athletics be postponed for at least two weeks, so that the emphasis could be put on getting students back to school.
The letter also stated that football and girls’ volleyball should be canceled or postponed to next year.
On Thursday, CIAC, DPH officials, and medical professionals met to discuss the recommendations in the letter. No final decision was made, but the CIAC Board of Control has scheduled to meet on Sunday at 7 p.m. to talk about forming a modified fall plan to submit to DPH.
The CIAC is also looking at the different guidance formulated for high school sports versus non-CIAC youth sports that have been taking place this summer. Since there is a ReOpen CT Rules Committee meeting being held today, CIAC hopes to get more information and then work with DPH again today or over the weekend on a fall plan.
To give teams more time to prepare for the fall season, the CIAC has additionally pushed back the start of skill work cohorts two days to Saturday, Aug. 29.
This story will be updated.
