Jaipur: With more than 30 lakh people having registered for the inaugural edition of the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympic Games, it is being termed as a pivotal moment that will help create a sporting culture in Rajasthan. Applauding the enthusiasm of the people at the launch of the theme song and unveiling of the mascot of the Games at the SMS Stadium on Monday, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said, “The Games are a step towards involving the society at large towards building a sporting atmosphere. It’s a long road but various efforts are being made to ensure sportspersons in the state get a platform to nurture and showcase their talent, and there are adequate facilities to groom promising athletes.”
The rural games are scheduled to begin from August 29 and continue till October 5 and people of all age-groups from various villages of the state will be seen competing in six games — kabaddi, shooting ball, volleyball, tennis ball cricket, kho kho and hockey.
The CM added that in the last four years there has been continuous efforts on the part of the government to ensure a support system for the athletes. “The efforts will continue so that in the future we will see more representation from Rajasthan at big events like Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Asiad,” he added.
He also stressed on the fact that the Games are not a political event and everyone must keep political differences aside to ensure it is successfully arranged.
Sports minister Ashok Chandna talked about the grandness of the event and said, “A budget of Rs 40 crore was earmarked for the rural games in the last budget and it is the largest sporting event being organised not only in Rajasthan, but in the country. From elderly to women and children, people will get to witness participation from all age groups.”
“There is no dearth of talent in Rajasthan. But we need to push children to step out and play sports and look beyond the digital games which consume a lot of their time these days. When kids will see elders participating and showing interest in sports, that would automatically serve as a motivation for them,” said Rajasthan State Sports Council chairperson Krishna Poonia.
