The Charlotte 49ers' men's soccer season has been postponed until the spring.

The Charlotte 49ers’ men’s soccer season has been postponed until the spring.

The NCAA announced recently it is postponing championships of its non-Football Bowl Subdivision fall sports.

So it came as little surprise that Conference USA on Friday said the seasons of those sports — volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer — will be shifted to the spring due to coronavirus concerns.

“We value the opportunity for our schools to compete at the highest level and play for championships,” C-USA commissioner Judy MacLeod said in a statement. “Moving these sports to the spring maintains those opportunities for our student-athletes, coaches and fans.”

The move impacts the league’s non-football fall team sports — there was no word on individual sports like cross-country. C-USA has already announced it’s moving ahead with football, allowing each team to play a conference schedule and up to four nonconference games. Old Dominion, however, has already announced it’s called off all its fall sports.

Schedules hadn’t yet been announced for the Charlotte 49ers’ soccer and volleyball teams.

“We want all of our teams to be well-positioned for postseason play,” 49ers athletics director Mike Hill said in a statement. “We spoke with our coaches and they wanted to move to the spring to coincide with NCAA championships. On top of that, our non-conference scheduling opportunities have been extremely limited due to the majority of other conferences moving to the spring.”

The 49ers football team is scheduled to open its season Sept. 12 at Appalachian State, one of 11 football games it has scheduled. Athletics director Mike Hill told The Observer recently it’s “not clear” if a 12th game will be scheduled.

Davidson, Mecklenburg County’s other Division I program, will be without sports this fall with the Pioneer Football League moving to the spring and the Atlantic 10 (of which most other Wildcats teams are members) also moving its fall sports to the spring unless there is a notable improvement in coronavirus news by mid-September.

Charlotte’s Division II programs — Queens and Johnson C. Smith — also aren’t playing this fall after decisions by the South Atlantic Conference and the CIAA, respectively.
