India’s count of COVID-19 cases crossed 12-lakh mark on Thursday with the highest single-day spike of 45,720 cases, according to the government data last evening.
The total number of coronavirus cases stand at 12,38,635 including 4,26,167 active cases, 7,82,606 cured/discharged/migrated. The cumulative toll has reached 29,861 deaths.
Meanwhile, the new British High Commissioner said India has a fantastic “vaccine capability” and it would play a crucial role in the partnerships the UK is building on COVID-19 vaccine development and manufacturing.
Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume, has partnered with biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to manufacture the experimental COVID-19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford.

Pharmaceutical firm Cipla is all set to launch Favipiravir, developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in a cost-effective process, for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, according to an official statement on Thursday.
An off-patent anti-viral drug, Favipiravir, originally discovered by Fuji Pharma in Japan, has shown promise in clinical trials for treatment of COVID-19 patients, especially in mild and moderate cases.
CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) developed a cost effective process using locally available chemicals to synthesise this Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) and transferred the technology to Cipla.
“Cipla has scaled up the process in their manufacturing facility and approached DCGI (Drug Controller General of India) for permission to launch the product in India. Given that DCGI has given restricted emergency use for Favipiravir in the country, Cipla is now all set to launch the product to help patients suffering from COVID-19,” the statement said.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry, Defence Ministry and Health Ministry will be participating in anti-COVID-19 cooperation initiative between India and Israel in the coming weeks.
“In the coming weeks, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Health will lead an unprecedented anti-COVID-19 cooperation operation between India and Israel,” the Indian embassy in Israel tweeted.
In a series of tweets, the embassy said that a high-ranking research and development (R&D) team of Israel’s Defence Ministry will be flying to New Delhi on a special flight.
Kerala Cabinet on Thursday decided to cancel the Assembly session scheduled on Monday, in the wake of an increasing number of COVID-19 cases with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stating that it is difficult to hold assembly session as MLAs will have to travel from their constituencies and many of them are above 60 years in age.
A special Cabinet meeting will be held on Monday where a decision will be taken on imposing a complete lockdown in the state.
“MLAs have to travel to Thiruvananthapuram from their constituency to attend the session. Many of them have to come from containment zones and most of them are above 60 years,” the Chief Minister said.
“If the Government conducts assembly session and any member gets affected, what would be the situation? In the present situation, it is difficult to conduct the assembly session by observing all COVID-19 protocols,” he added.
The Odisha government on Thursday said that the guidelines issued to allow home isolation to all COVID-19 positive patients, who are asymptomatic/have mild symptoms and have no comorbidities in urban areas, will also apply to rural areas in the state.
Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra, Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department said that COVID-19 cases are increasing because of intensified house to house survey and testing of symptomatic people.
“During the last few days, it is found that COVID-19 positive cases are increasing in the state but the people need not to panic. It is because of intensified house to house survey and testing of symptomatic people,” he said.
“Health infrastructure is stable in the state. There is an adequate stock of medicine and logistics for coming four months to combat COVID-19,” added Mr Mohapatra.
