Beed shopkeepers to be tested to detect ‘super spreaders’
- Aurangabad: Beed district in Maharashtra is starting rapid antigen tests of shopkeepers, vegetable vendors, milk sellers and petrol pump employees from Tuesday to detect COVID-19 ‘super spreaders’, an official said.
- The rapid antigen tests would be conducted for three days from Tuesday on shopkeepers, vegetable and fruit vendors, milk sellers, and bank and petrol pump employees, the official from the district administration said.

Amid pandemic, flight movements up 12 times at Goa airport: Airports Authority of India
- Despite the rising number of Covid cases, flight movements at the Goa airport increased almost 12 times last month as compared to April this year.
- It said this is a sign of normalcy returning at the Goa airport, located at the INS Hansa base in Vasco town.
- The Airports Authority of India (AAI) posted a chart, showing 27 flight movements at the Goa airport in April this year, followed by 59 in May, 265 in June and 318 in July.

Infectious COVID-19 mutation may be “a good thing”, says disease expert
- A mutation of the novel coronavirus increasingly common throughout Europe and recently detected in Malaysia may be more infectious but appears less deadly, according to a prominent infectious diseases doctor.
- Paul Tambyah, senior consultant at the National University of Singapore and president-elect of the U.S.-based International Society of Infectious Diseases, said the D614G mutation has also been found in Singapore.
- Tambyah said there is evidence the proliferation of the mutation in Europe has coincided with a drop in death rates, suggesting it is less lethal.
- The mutation is not likely to impact the efficacy of a potential vaccine, despite warnings to the contrary from other health experts, he added.

- Uber and smaller rival Lyft Inc said they would be forced to shut their ride-hailing operations in California if the court ruling goes into effect on Friday morning.
- Eats has been a boon to Uber during the pandemic as Americans stay home and many businesses and restaurants remain shut. Delivery orders in the second quarter more than doubled, while ride-hailing trip bookings, in the past responsible for nearly two-thirds of Uber’s revenue, were down 75% from last year.
Illinois launches COVID-19 hotspot travel map
- Illinois public health officials have launched a COVID-19 hotspot map for travelers to check before leaving the state.
- The online map of the United States shows which states have an average daily case rate of at least 15 cases per 100,000 people, which are considered higher risk areas.
- The Illinois Department of Public Health says the idea is to help people assess their risk before they travel outside the state.
FDA flags accuracy problem with widely used coronavirus test
- Potential accuracy issues with a widely used coronavirus test could lead to false results for patients, U.S. health officials warned.
- The Food and Drug Administration issued the alert Monday to doctors and laboratory technicians using Thermo Fisher’s TaqPath genetic test.
- Regulators said issues related to the equipment and software used to run the test could lead to inaccuracies.
- The warning comes nearly a month after Connecticut public health officials first reported that at least 90 people had received false positive results for the coronavirus.
