Coronavirus claimed another victim in South Jersey with the cancellation of fall sports by the Burlington City School District.

During a Monday night vote, Burlington’s Board of Education decided not to pay coaches for football, field hockey, cheerleading and boys and girls soccer.

The nine-member school board needed six votes to OK coaching salaries. Only five board members supported playing sports this fall.

Also benched were the director of Burlington’s national champion marching band and the Color Guard director.

Burlington City is  the third school district in the county to cancel fall sports, joining Medford Tech and Westampton Tech.

“Sometimes we have to make decisions that affect our own children, or the majority of children,” board member Crystal Mettrock told the Burlington County Times.

Last week, a decision was made to sideline Lenape football games for 14 days due to COVID-19, although parents are pushing back. Lenape’s Oct. 2 opener against Cherokee was postponed.

Delran’s football team cancelled practices, but plans to resume on Sept. 29.
