According to the National Crime Records Bureau report, the pandemic had a significant influence on the crimes that were registered in India in 2020.

Considering the cases registered under the offence ‘Disobedience to order duly promulgated by Public Servant’, a lot of cases were registered for violations of Covid-19 norms like no mass assembling, wearing a mask etc. From 29,000 cases in 2019 the number of cases rose to 6,12,000 cases in 2020.

Road-related incidents came down from 4,16,000 cases in 2019 to 3,12,000 cases in 2020.

The number of sexual harassment in public transport systems was 232 in 2020, a slight dip when compared to 2019.  This was primarily due less number of people using the public transport system during the pandemic times.

Due to restrictions in travelling, there was a decrease in the flow of foreigners to the country. The number of crimes against foreigners decreased from 404 in 2019 to just 191 cases in 2020.
