A community outdoor rink in the Town of Crossfield will be transformed into a year-round sports facility with a $25,000 grant from a province-wide not-for-profit organization dedicated to the growth and development of amateur sport in Alberta.
The grant, from Makadiff Sports, has allowed Crossfield to begin work on the outdoor rink located in the Amery Park area in the northwest community of Vista Crossing.
“We are grateful to Makadiff Sports for their generous donation,” said Crossfield Mayor Jo Tennant. “Having an outdoor facility which can be used year-round will provide a real benefit to the residents in this community.”
Professional Excavators and Construction Ltd. has been contracted to complete the work, which includes paving a large asphalt pad to serve as the base of the rink. In the winter, there will be boards around it for the ice, and two basketball nets will be erected for use during the spring/summer months.
A high chainlink fence at each end of the rink area will help keep pucks from flying into vehicles and basketballs from dribbling out into the roadway.
Work on the project started September 9th and, barring any unexpected delays, the town is hoping to have everything set up in time to flood the ice this year.
Makadiff Sports, through its Innovation Challenge program, provides grants which encourage the growth and development of amateur sport through financial support of worthy innovative initiatives. The Innovation Challenge specifically awards grants to deserving organizations with fresh ideas for taking community sport in positive new directions with the goal of enhancing access, active participation, and positive experiences.
